Should I flash the "Retropie" image onto my SD card that already has Noobs?
-
Hello,
I am new to the Raspberry Pi / RetroPie world. I've been doing some research and watching videos on how to get started. I would like to configure a machine to be an emulator to play arcade games from the 80's and 90's. What I've learned so far is that it's better to get an all-in-one Raspberry Pi kit. These kits contain an SD card with Noobs pre-installed. I am not really sure what Noobs is so I will need to research that further. So back to my question. In the tutorial videos I've seen, they are usually saying to flash the RetroPie image onto the SD card. If I do that, I believe that would delete the Noobs OS from the card. So my question is, should I do that? Or is there another way where I can install RetroPie on the card and keep Noobs there? Thank you for your assistance.

@fretman Noobs is just the Raspberry Pi OS (Raspian) if you want to use your Pi as a computer which you don't. You wont be able to have both on there so just flash RetroPie latest version to the SD card and it'll erase Noobs OS or a different SD if you want as a 32gb one wont be very expensive. Plenty of YT videos out there for tutorials on how to flash the image and put your roms on there. Good luck!

@fretman noobs is an easy installer, you just need to put a keyboard on your pi,turn on, and press Shift key, then you will have a little list with distributions compatibles, before retropie always be in noobs, i don't know now.
If isnt, obviously you need to have internet connection! , you can try Raspberry Pi Imager, that is the tool that actually Raspberry Pi recommend. Go to Official Raspberry web page for more detailed info -
@hawkes_84, thank you for clarifying. I think I am going to bypass the Raspberry Pi Kit and buy the parts individually as it's going to be more cost effective. This way I won't need to worry about Noobs. I'm just going to get a blank 64gb SD card. I think that should be enough storage for my games wishlist.

@4retropietft , thank you for your feedback. I am going to do more research into RetroPie and Raspberry PI. Seems like it's going to be an interesting side project for me.

@fretman yes I was going to suggest this. Integral is a decent make SD card and 64gb should be more than enough unless you want to start doing ps1 games etc in in which case you'll need to get selective. Hope it goes well

@fretman
Download raspberry pi imager to your pc, put your sd card onto usb to sd adapter or if you pc have an sdcard reader, install raspberry pi imager, open it, if your sdcard is 64gb or more, choose erase option, then your sd, then write. If your sd is 32gb or less just go to choose os, Emulation and game OS, RetroPie, choose the image for your model. Then choose storage and choose your sd (if 64gb or more your recent formatted with erase option sd card) then write. Wait the process of verification and finally click ok, get out the sd from pc and put in your pi, power up, enjoy. -
