Reduce display size

Anyone know of a tool or configuration that would allow you to output to only part of the display? I want to install a large lcd sideways in a cabinet to maximize the width.
So far my tinkering with config.txt has allowed me to change rotation, resolution, etc but the overscan options are very finicky and there doesn't seem to be a way to stop it stretching to the available space.
