Manual Install of Retropie failed
-
Hello
I am running Raspberry Pi bullseye OS on a RPi4. I want to manually install RetroPie on this Pi.
I followed the install instructions on "Install Raspbian/Raspberry Pi OS" doc on "https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Manual-Installation/".
After a very long time I got the following message...
Could not successfully build sdl2 - SDL (Simple DirectMedia layer) v2.x
(/home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/tmp/build/sdl2/libsdl2-dev_2.0.10+5rpi_armhf.deb not found)
I am not sure how to proceed.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks -
@fmentiplay did you download the legacy version of raspberry pi os? The latest bullseye release is not supported.
You might be better to just use a preinstalled image btw.

Thanks for your reply. The documentation doesn't mention lack of support for bullseye.
I want the experience of manually installing Retropie or is it not possible to do a manual install on a RPi4?
Could you please tell me which Raspberry Pi OS I should use? bullseye? Buster? Jessie?
I want to have a Raspberry Pi to do my work and occassionally play a game. I don't want to have to swap out a SD card ever time I want to play a Game.

@fmentiplay Use the Buster image.
The RetroPie image is just raspberry Pi OS lite (buster) with RetroPie installed over the top.

Once again, thanks for your help.
It seems to be there are 2 issues if you want to try a manual install of RetroPie on the Raspberry Pi.
One issue is the hardware. Does RetroPie support RPi4?
Second issue software. What Raspberryy PI OS does RetroPie support.Is the RPi4 hardware with Raspberry Pi OS buster software is a workable solution for attempting to install RetroPie manually?
I appreciate your help.

@fmentiplay Yes. That configuration will work. You should exit the desktop to launch RetroPie though if using the full Raspberry Pi OS Vs the lite version.

@buzz
Thank you. I will give it a try. While I was waiting for your reply I down loaded the latest RetroPie image for RPi4 from https://retroPie.org.uk and installed it just to try it out. It says it is version 4.7.1.
This is a very old image. The current version of RetroPie is 4.7.20.
Why is the official Image so old?
Regards -
@fmentiplay Because it hasn't been updated yet. But you can update once the image is written easily enough.
