I have had problems over the past couple years with Retropie sometimes audio working well out of the box on a new installation and sometimes not. I don't think until today had I figured it out. I have read everything from editing the config.txt file, to trying to hack and tweak things.

There are 3 places that you need to change your audio settings. One is in the Retropie UI, when you click start, there is an audio setting. Normally for HDMI it is just default, then HDMI then ALSA as your options. Then under the Retropie option in retropie there is an audio setting, that is another place you go into to set to HDMI or headphones. But then today I stumbled upon a third setting (this was the one that was causing my problems). It was under the raspian tools there is an audio system setting where you also have to set it to HDMI. That was the one that was causing me not to get audio once I adjusted it, everything worked fine.

Hooefully this helps someone else out.

The Audio settings in the RetroPie system (or audiosettings in RetroPie-Setup's configuration/tools) is doing the same thing as the raspi-config options.
