Arcade-Joysticks (Boards) and Retropie
-
Briefly a question about different joysticks to Retropie. I usually use USB joypads, which have always worked well.
-
can you also use 1-2 button joysticks without any problems, for example the USB-replicas of the Competition pro?
-
I'm also toying with the idea of connecting an arcade joystick board (a stick, several buttons with micro switches on a board) to my Retropie. Certainly I can't use my Dreamcast's arcade boards. There are few adapters and whether they work...?!
But I have seen that there are ready-made solutions, such as https://www.reichelt.de/diy-controller-arcade-usb-kub-arcade-p294939.html?PROVID=2788. Has anyone had experience with Acrade boards and can recommend one that is compatible with Retropie?

@10vorne Hello I built an arcade cabinet myself. I use an Ipac2 from Ultimarc. For two players setup. I connected 2x seimitsu joysticks, 1x coin acceptor, 1x U-trak trackbal and 18x arcade buttons. Everything works like expected (for my setup the Ipac2 simulates 2x Dinput analog joysticks and a trackball as a mouse device). But if you don't want use a mouse device, there is a possibility to use this device in Xinput or Keyboard mode too.
But my setup is more expensive way to go.
Kind Regards

@10vorne I use two of the ubiquitous and generic Dragonrise usb-encoders, which expectedly just plug into the usb ports on my Pi3B+ and that's all that's needed.
The stick in your link states usb functionality and also claims to be 'Kompatibel mit PC / Raspberry / Odroid / Windows / MacOs', so based on that, I'd say it SHOULD work...

@WeirdH remove the two two-pin connectors in red from the image you posted and you get a nearly identical image to the encoder displayed in the manual linked on the reichelt.de side ;)
@10vorne cannot say anything about the quality of the buttons and stick (I for instance prefer convex buttons and bat-tops for the stick(s)) of the linked kit, but it will work as any diy-project using an "arcade stick and buttons" with a so called zero-delay usb-encoder. Edit: If, later you are interested in a true DIY experience, I would like to recommend the slagcoin web
sidesite. It contains many usefull information about the design/layout of a control-board.P.S.: In my experience the Buttons/Sticks that can be found on the "mainstream" electronic stores in germany (conrad, pollin, etc.) and even such as the berrybase are not the best source for arcade components, especially the buttons are IMHO overpriced. Before the Brexit I would have recommended some british stores, but there are also a few dedicated "arcade" stores in germany and the netherlands to be found.

@Ashpool The problem is more the DIY :) Therefore I would like to have an affordable ready-made solution. Microswitches are built into my arcade cabinet, I asked Reichelt whether microswitches are built into the boards, we'll see, but I don't think so. They still have a solution, but for the same price it is not a DIY solution AND there is also lighting. That can actually be nothing great :D

@10vorne the "KUB" branded stuff is from a company that simply imports the cheapest stuff from China they can find, and then resells it, whether it is functional or not, so assume it does not.
-
@10vorne If you don't wanna go the DIY road; get yourself a used Namco Arcade Stick and a ps to usb adapter (like Mcbazel Brook PS2 to PS3/PS4/PC).
That Arcade Stick is great not only for the switches but also in terms of ergonomics. It depends on the deal you can get on ebay on it but surely will cost more than 25 euros....I modded mine with new arcade buttons and dual connection to real Neo Geo pcb.

@UDb23 I own a Dreamcast Arcade-Board. Is there a reliable possibility to connect it to a pi?
-
@10vorne Yes, there is the Mayflash DC to USB Adapter, but it somehow can't map the C and the Z button. This way you only have 4 functional buttons, which might be enough for a lot of games.
Then there is the raphnet adapter (especially the internal one) where you can make a total conversion of the arcade stick. But shipping to Germany is expensive...
