No Audio Using Argon One V2 Case
-
Pi Model or other hardware: Pi 4b 4GB
Power Supply used: Supply that came with Argon One V2 case
RetroPie Version Used (eg 3.6, 3.8.1, 4.1 - do not write latest): 4.8
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
USB Devices connected: 256GB Sandisk
Controller used: SN30+
Error messages received: NoneFound this odd:
Port farthest from power jack has video and no audio.
Port Closest to Power Jack has color wheel splashscreen then boot text then nothing... also still no audio when starting a game with button presses from memory in case it was a video output issue.
Unplugging the daughter board and using a micro HDMI direct to Pi board works great on both ports. Audio and Video work just fine this way.Have videos at my Google Drive link here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1or0VOxhkdL5hKw_nWVNvRPVp79dlzLs1?usp=sharingI know this is not the official Argon support channel but research has brought me to multiple forums that say the innermost port works by default with Audio and Video.
However I feel something is happening with the config where I get that color wheel then boot text then nothing...
Is there something wrong with my config?
Its stock RetroPie 4.8 from official image. Can see daughterboard here:

Fixed the link (just surround it with
< >
and it won't be re-formatted).My guess is that the daughterboard may be modifying the EDID data and the RPI doesn't detect audio as being advertised by the display.
You can force HDMI audio by adding to
config.txt
:hdmi_force_edid_audio = 1
then reboot.
-
I have added that line to the /boot/config.txt and wrote it out then restarted and sadly still no sound.
-
Hm, try the advice from https://forum.libreelec.tv/thread/22079 and add to your
config.txt
:hdmi_drive=2 hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080 hdmi_mode=16 hdmi_group=1
Adjust
hdmi_mode
andhdmi_group
for your display's resolution - take a look at https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/config_txt.html#hdmi_mode for the available values. The values posted above (1/16) are for a 1080p display. -
@mitu I have sound now so that is a welcome change.
Unfortunately we have a large black letterbox around the image and resolution scaling is off. I used the hex value that was provided for 1080p 19280x1080 as is the same in the forum. To be specific the boot sequence is in proper res, Retropie menus are in porper res but emulation engine is letterboxed. -

This seems to have worked well :-)
Do you think the daughterboard is still defective? The contacts go through traces to full size hdmi ports at the rear. No chips on board. Feel like it should have just worked out of the box. -

I don't know - if it works with the configuration you have right now, it seems unlikely to be defective.
-
@mitu I understand. I really appreciate all your help. It appears to be working well enough to use. I tested between a 12 year old Visio 1080p and a 3 year old 4k Sony Bravia and it works equally well on both.
Only complaint I have now is a nitpicky one. When in the menus the audio click I hear when scrolling is delayed and has inconsistent tonalities that are grating to the ear. Can only be described as sometimes scratchy and sometimes clicky. Lol. I can live with it if no ideas on that one. When in games the audio is fine and right on time.
