Pi4 with case and fan
-
Hi, all. I managed to obtain a Pi4 2GB model to use exclusively as a RetroPie for the kids. I used this case, which aside from being particularly appropriate for the project, comes with heat sinks and a fan. The fan can be configured to run at 5v or 3v. At 5v it isn't all that noisy, but the 3V setting is pretty much silent.
So the question I have for folks is have you found that more aggressive cooling is necessary to keep the Pi 4 from throttling during extended play sessions, or will moderate cooling do the trick? No overclocks are in place.

@tribunal88 if it's overheating/throttling, you'll see a temperature icon on the top right(?) of the screen. if you don't see one, you're good :)
i'm sure in the right environment (sahara desert, my grandma's house) you could get it to overheat, but in my experience at stock clocks a pi4 will not overheat playing retropie content. i've never used a fan.

@dankcushions Thanks. I'll have the kids keep an eye out for that (when they get the goods this Christmas).

@tribunal88 I have a pi 3 in that case, and I've had it on for days at a time. As long as you aren't blocking the ventilation so they Pi can breathe, the fan alone should be fine.
