[EDIT: solved my own problem already - in /opt/retropie/configs.hdmi/all/retroarch/config/cap32 there's a file called CAP32.OPT with a setting cap32_scr_intensity = "5". Crank it to 9 or 10 for super-brightness. Wonder why they defaulted it so low?]

This is Donkey Kong running on lr-caprice32:

This is the GX4000 port of the same game running on lr-mess-system-cpc6128p-cart:

No other settings have been changed. I can't find anything in Options or Settings>Video that would explain the difference. Has one emulator just been intrinsically and unavoidably coded to have a murky screen for "authenticity" or something? Am I stuck with playing CPC games in a gloomy basement unless someone's made a cart conversion of them?

(I've tried various forks of lr-mess-system-cpc6128 to run the DSK version instead, but none of them work as well as lr-caprice32, other than in terms of brightness.)

Raspberry Pi 3b and 8GB Raspberry Pi 4, both running Retropie 4.7.1 installed from scratch using Raspberry Pi Imager, with wired keyboard, wireless mouse and double arcade joystick attached.

@JimmyFromTheBay This has absolutely nothing to do with me since I don't use this emulator.

I just wanted to throw a "thank you" in here though for posting the answer to your own question after you found it. Google searches bring people here sometimes to find answers to the same problems they may be having and it's frustrating to see nothing entered or, worse, "I found it. I'm good."... then no explanation.

        Thanks from the future! 😀
