How do you gain rep?

The issue is self explanatory; I would like to get at least 3 rep to be able to change my profile pic to something other than a dead meme.
why do I keep running into problems

The default image for your user is from https://gravatar.com/ if you have that configured for your email, otherwise it uses a generated pixel based avatar. So you could have changed your gravatar image if it wasn't to your liking.
