I installed RetroPi on my Raspberry Pi and on startup the EmulationStation launches and works fine.

      I have 2 questions:

      • What user the EmulationStation is running under.

      • Does the installation create some account that auto logs into the system?

@frizzo the installation doesn't create any account. If you install manually it is installed under the current user. If you use the premade image it is configured as user pi.

@sleve_mcdichael Are you sure? It auto logs in. But when I SSH into the RPi using the pi user, I have to provide a password. Wouldn't that indicate that it's another account that is setup for auto-login?

Why the auto-login account can't be pi ? If you exit EmulationStation (without rebooting), you'll be presented with the command line prompt, where you can check what's your logged in user - using whoami. On the pre-made image from https://retropie.org.uk/download, that user is pi.

Note: the fact that auto-login works on the console (and start EmulationStation) doesn't mean the user doesn't have a password set.

              Yes.

The password, if you haven't changed it, is raspberry. As configured by default, this is not required on the local terminal, only for remote logins.
