Can someone help me work out a controller for running caprice32 on steam deck

I can't control any games.
I'm using Emudeck, Retroarch and Caprice32 on a Steamdeck.
For the most part, nothing I do seems to correspond to what the amstrad emulator thinks is going on.
I've tried virtual joysticks, virtual keyboards, loading an emulator on mac and seeing what works. Nothing really helps.
All I need is a virtual keyboard and a joystick control but nothing seems to work.
Any help greatly appreciated.

The Libretro doc page on Caprice32 is pretty extensive - did you look into it ?
