Where can I put my custom startrek samples from yesteryear and have them work? :)

Long ago when I was on the MAME team in the 90s, I made a custom set of star trek samples using sounds from the old series. It was popular for a while. Anyway, the 2016 set, I dont think uses samples. I've tried putting them in the bios samples folders for 2003 etc and each team i switch mame versions besides 2016, it says it can't find them. I have it working on my computer version of mame that's almost as new as 2016. Very odd. Has anyone used custom samples successfully and in what mame? what directory? Be well!! -Doug

@duglor That's correct. I don't remember the version number, but somewhere in the 2010's MAME stopped using samples on certain games, and as the years have passed, even less games do and rely on the core plus the ROM to generate more realistic sounds.
Galaxian is a great example of that.... and Gorf. The newest version of Gorf now uses Vox to help emulate the actual discrete sound board. It sounds amazing now.
What you can do is just use an older version of MAME that uses your samples like lr-mame2003_plus. They should work in that, but I'm not 100% as I don't have Star Trek as part of my build. I don't use a mouse for the control. That version of MAME is optimized for Retropie but is the older core from back then. Just make sure the rom matches the mame version. There are only a few MAME versions for RetroPie. If none of them pick-up your samples, then your out of luck, they moved on and use the core for sound emulation.
BTW... I remember your sounds. For the longest time, I used them as well. Thanks!

@jamrom2 I'm actually at a loss ..i must have done something because all of my mame 2003 and 2003 plus samples are not working. I thought they were to be in /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples/ and
/home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003 plus/samples?no?
if i made a boo-boo...is there a setting that you know of a wat where i can point mame 2003 and 2003 plus to their samples?
