Emulator: lr-mupen64plus

The problem:

Context: I have sunk 20 hours into this game with almost no problems at all.

Randomly several months ago the game started crashing after I enter a specific entry way in the game.

Things I have tried to fix:

using save states to retry: By simply retrying over and over with save states I managed to get through the door. There were no heavy animations or special effects or cutscenes once on the other side. Was able to play it for a few minutes before entering a different door caused it to crash again. The game doesn't save when it crashes so this rendered this method unsuitable as a fix.

disabling overclock

using a fresh rom from a different source

using a different emulator: This didn't work because I couldn't get the other emulators to work. Details below:

lr-mupen64plus-next doesn't allow me any ability to use the controls or keyboard. I have tried deleting the remaps in /opt/retropie/configs/n64/Mupen64Plus-Next/ and re generating them by opening the game in ES. Using this emulator might be the fix. But, I can't figure out how to get controls back for it. I am using this emulator for other games as well. They were all playable at one point, now none have the ability to be controlled with Shanwan controller or keyboard. I don't remember the context of what happened around the time this started. I probably donked something up and don't know how to fix it. Working on getting to this. The game also doesn't run very smooth with this emulator iirc from my initial testing after I installed the rom several years ago.
*mupen64plus-GlideN64 Could not find a way to migrate a .srm into a .sav or .fla succesfully. Tried renaming the files and other tips found in other forums. No luck.
*Other emulators Do not run well with this game.

resolution is currently set to "Clear / Remove" in runcommand but I have tried it in the highest and lowest settings with almost no difference. It's usually at 1280x720@50hz option 87-27.

The only other thing I haven't tried is starting the game over. Which I would really like to avoid.

I had same problem on recalbox. For some reason switching to rice. Running the game and let it crash again then switching the video ratio to 16:9 let it run makes it work, but then everything is lagging. Then switch everything back the way it were and everything runs smoothly. I don't know why. It just worked and I can play again. It was also on a door opening

Update: Just installed version 4.8.2 of retropie and retested all of my previous attempts to fix. This issue still persists.
