lr-Flycast won't close clean

Running RetroPie 4.8 on rpi4 (armv71) - buster.
The other thing to note is I'm using a X-Arcade PC Fightstick with keyboard inputs.
If I launch a game like MVSC2 and let it fully start it will close clean using the start hotkey combo.
But if I play the game for a few rounds and then try to exit it closes flycast but then shows the "launching xxx game" gray box on a black screen. At the bottom of the screen it shows a ton of keyboard inputs. It never goes away and I have to reboot the pi to get back.
I'm wondering if the buffer is getting overloaded with the keyboard inputs from the x-arcade?
