I was recently remapping buttons from the in-game menu, which I accessed using the TAB key. I believe I was in a game running on advmame. I accidentally closed the menu with the TAB key removed in the button settings, and left no button assigned to access the in-game menu again. So now I can't access the in-game menu from any games running on any emulators. I have searched high and low, resaved the retroarch.cfg file from the backup, and searched for emulator specific cfg files, all to no avail.

TLDR: How can I reassign the TAB key as my access to the in-game menu? I have no way of accessing the menu to assign it there because I left the menu open key unassigned. Thanks in advance!

@esjayem I don't have advmame but both 2003 and 2010 put folders in the roms/{system} (arcade or mame-libretro -- yours would be mame-advmame and now I think about it, is not libretro so might not work the same way) folder with some additional configs in it. If you have one for advmame you could try deleting it & see if that helps.

@sleve_mcdichael Thanks for your reply. I will look again in file manager. I am pretty sure the system rom folders were empty but will confirm and delete if they are in there.

(Side note to the forum: Sorry for not saying it sooner, but I’m running retropie on a Pi 3b plus and just reinstalled retropie. No change to the tab not working in-game since I boneheadedly unassigned it even with the freshy).
