Can't backup microSD with Win32 DiskImager
-
I can no longer get Windows to see my microSD of RetroPie with Win32 DiskImager for backup.
I have done this in the past over and over, but today the computer basically hangs. In Windows Disk Management, the drive has shown as "Online" but with no drive letter. Correspondingly, Win32 DiskImager does not have a device letter to select, and it does not function.
The SD card should be EXT4 file system. Again, I have done this in the past many times.
I don't know what may have happened from the last time I've backed up the microSD card, but it is now stalled.
Thanks

The SD card has actually 2 partition, first is Fat16 and 2nd is Ext4. Windows should be able to see and write to to the 1st partition. If the sdcard still works with your Pi, then the issue is with the sdcard reader - you can try reading it on another computer to see if it's detected properly.

To make a long story short, I was able to write an image (clone/backup) using "DiskInternals Linux Reader". "Win32 DiskImager" doesn't seem to work for me anymore.
Thanks for replying!
I'm not sure what's going on .
Here's a longer story of notes:
I'm now experimenting with a less critical SD card; the results are as follows and similar to the RetroPie mSD:The card reader is a multi-card reader.
EXT file system in microSD slot - not recognized by Windows (NOT recognized by Win32 DiskImager).
EXT file system in SD slot with microSD-SD adapter - not recognized by Windows (NOT recognized by Win32 DiskImager).
EXT file system in USB-microSD adapter - not recognized by Windows (NOT recognized by Win32 DiskImager).
RetroPie microSD in USB-microSD adapter - not recognized by Windows (NOT recognized by Win32 DiskImager) (WAS recognized by additional program "DiskInternals Linux Reader").Non-EXT microSD in card reader's microSD slot - recognized by Windows.
Non-EXT microSD in microSD-SD adapter in card reader's SD slot - recognized by Windows.
Non-EXT file systems in multi-card reader: CompactFlash OK; USB flash drive OK.
Non-EXT file system in USB-microSD adapter - recognized by Windows (IS recognized by Win32 DiskImager).Memory cards not recognized (or very slow) during second attempt.
RetroPie microSD in Rasperberry Pi is OK.
Conclusion: Windows having problem with RetroPie microSD card EXT partition.
Note: the RetroPie microSD in a microSD-USB adapter was NOT recognized by Windows (but WAS recognized by additional program "DiskInternals Linux Reader").Driver issue?
SD card works with Pi; PC reads other non-EXT SD cards.
Task Manager had weird issue today: HDD and other drives weren't showing up (during hang-ups with memory card issues).
Ran: sfc /scannow - All OK.
Ran: dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth - May have repaired something; reported "fixed".Uninstalled Win32 DiskImager / Reboot / Reinstalled Win32 DiskImager - no difference of reading the RetroPie mSD.

If you have access in a Linux desktop, you can try to backup the sd card with dd command.

Win32DiskImager stopped working for me all of a sudden a couple years ago, I had no clue why. It just would not execute.
Eventually I find out that installing Google Disk Drive (which created a new Drive in My Computer) was preventing the software from starting up.
Do you have anything like that on your pc? -
@navi87 It's working for me but i don't have google drive installed. i have the latest version (January 10, 2023): https://win32diskimager.org/ . Try to reinstall the latest version.
