I designed an built an Arcade Bartop game machine with led illuminated buttons only lighting up the buttons that are used with each game console.
This is done via the existing GPIO pins from the Raspberry Pi 3b and a few transistors (to protect the Raspberry pi against short circuit and overvoltage).
The software is written in very small Python programs and Linux scripts are used to activate the Python programs. See this instructable:
      https://www.instructables.com/Arcade-Bartop-With-Illuminated-Buttons-Per-Console/

This design can be used on any type of Retropie Arcade machine.
      Enjoy!
