ZFS file system for snapshots / rollbacks
-
How many times have you experienced, or seen posts in support, in which someone says:
I have done X and now Y is broke and I can’t undo it.
And then someone says: copy all of your files and reinstall base software.
Or how many times have you wanted to experiment but we’re afraid of repercussions?
ZFS and snapshots make this a whole lot easier- think of it a bit like Time Machine for Linux.
Obviously there’s a lot more to it than that, but that’s the feature likely most appealing to retropie users - no more images and reinstalls.
Added bonus is ZFS is already on Debian buster and bullseye and should be relatively simple to implement over ext4, or at least give the option.
This may also increase stability for installs on sd cards.
Downsides may include increased writes on media and perhaps slower boot times.
Plus side is might reduce the support request volume by an order of magnitude.

Caveat: requires 64 bit, not sure if that’s in the Retropie pipeline.
Also has some usb / uasp boot issues but may be surmountable- get it?
