Retropie freezing each time I go into a system to start looking at games (roms folder stored on a network drive)

Hello all,

Can anyone give me any advice on how to correct the subject?

I am on a pi4 with retropie 4.8 installed.

The only valid thing I can say is I have my roms stored on a shared drive and I believe that may be causing this issue but I'm not sure.

My goal would be to keep the games on the shared drive if possible, even if it requires me to move artwork files etc. to somewhere else.

I would appreciate some advice if anybody has some for this situation.

You need to add more details about your setup. How is the ROM folder configured with the network setup - is it mounted by NFS or SMB, are you using a WiFi or wired connection ? Are you able to browse the ROM folder (mounted from the network) without errors from the Pi side ?

I don't know how to answer the NFS or SMB question. I shared the folder in question through windows sharing utility.

So my understanding is that I shared it as NTFS?

But then I shared the folder back to the windows machine from the pi as SMB so that I could be sure that things were working properly.

I use this as my autostart line (not sure if that helps any):

sudo mount -t cifs -o username=WESTON,password=xxxx,nounix,noserverino //WESTONSPC/roms /home/pi/RetroPie/roms

It is a wifi connection.

I am able to browse the ROM folder without errors on the PI side.

No, it's shared as SMB/CIFS. NTFS is the Windows filesystem type, the network protocol is SMB/CIFS.

OK, so if the files are visible from the RetroPie system, then it's not a matter of permissions.

Can you be more specific about the files not being shown in EmulationStation - what system, files are not visible ? Give some examples.
Each system has its own list of known file extensions, based on which the ROM/games are shown, so it may very well be that the system in question is not configured to show some file extensions. Remember also on Linux the filenames are case sensitive.

@mitu Thank you for this correction

This issue has corrected itself after connecting to the network by ethernet.

I believe this was happening because I had all systems roms showing a video rather than just a screenshot and the system was having to pull all of those depending upon which system menu I entered.

Thank you again for assisting me with all of the issues I am running into. Many keep falling back to the network access sadly. Maybe not from here forward!!
