Dolphin / Gamecube / Wiiware / Wii Compatibility on Pi 5

@feldkiste you don't need the desktop no, you just need the ability to run xorg/x11. I did a reinstall earlier as I brought the nvme base and decided to do a fresh install rather than copy my existing SD card.
So usual steps, install 64bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite, follow RetroPie manual steps, then standalone dolphin. Only thing I needed to do was install gldriver-test as without it xorg wouldn't load for me and gave a framebuffer error

@abj What about 3DS and Wii U? :p
That aged like fine wine.
Jokes aside, sorry I couldn't get to testing Mario Party 4 and 7 beforehand. Life was happening recently, and I couldn't get time to test them.
-
When you do get to Wii games eventually, I have a truckload that I can legally test. So when you need to test Wii games, I may be able to help you.
-
@AwesomeKingClem oh the file is public, feel free to add a sheet for Wii. I didn't add originally as I'd only found a handful of working Wii games (2d ones usually) whereas Wiiware and GameCube I'd found a higher success rate

@retropieuser555
Thanks to confirm that thegldriver-test
package was necessary, it puzzled me the last time i did a clean install of RetroPie. Maybe @mitu must include it in the dependencies of the Dolphin script. -
@abj It is already included.
-
@mitu is there some issue with this? Trying from a clean install yesterday from scratch it didn't install it oddly, but you added it in a few months ago?:-
-
@retropieuser555 Oh nice! I have 4 already set up, so expect some changes soon!
@abj I'm sorry, what do you mean by gldriver-test? I never heard anyone mention it before.
Edit: Ah, I looked at one of the posts in this thread and saw what you were talking about. That may be the issue with so many of my ports not working. -

I'll check, maybe there's some error somewhere.
EDIT: yes, it doesn't work. We need to find another solution to this.
-
@mitu @retropieuser555 Thanks for your replies! I just installed the Desktop version due to some errors I was experiencing before, but reading this now it may also have been the missing gldriver-test.
So for Lite version you would also install xorg after / before the RetroPie installation like:
64bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite
[ retropie manual install steps ]
Optional: sudo apt install xserver-xorg xinit x11-xserver-utils
sudo apt install gldriver-test
Install dolphin-emu through retropie_setup.sh (experimental packages).I will replicate this to see if it works as expected, only I do not understand the point about helper.sh yet. If it says at some point the file is missing I just get it from github and put it in the expected location?
I will assume so and report back soon!
EDIT: Thanks for the comment, I updated the steps above accordingly.

No,
xorg
is not stictly necessary, justgldriver-test
. Alsodolphin
installation is handled by RetroPie-Setup, not done viaapt

No, just follow the manual installation document, then update RetroPie regularly. Support for Pi5 is still ongoing, so some things are expected not to be 100% working. Please post your issues in the Pi5 topic, not here.

@retropieuser555
I am a lot more experienced in Microsoft's tools, so I don't really excel in Google Sheets.
(Pun totally intended)I will try to edit it the best I can, but if it is not up to your standards, I do apologize.
The 4 games I have to test are Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Party 9, and New Super Mario Bros Wii. -

Wikipedia Wii List: "There are 1638 games on this list."
Uhh... :P
Should it just be a separate list?Edit: Ok, I just finished editing Wii in there. I hope it looks alright.

Hmm. Looks like you put it into the GameCube list with alternating colors? The list is good, but that location won't fly. Hope you don't mind that I went ahead and moved your list from the GameCube sheet into it's own "Wii" sheet, removed the colors and added the filter and froze the top row.
I also made some simple header color changes so it's more clear which tab you're on:
- Purple: GameCube
- Blue: Wii
- Gray: WiiWare
Lastly, removed any columns to the right of the current filters to keep it clean and prevent folks from adding possible breaking data outside the filter.
Also, if you have the time, might want to look for errors in the names, such as this one:
Active Life: Magical Carnival•Issho ni Asobou! Dream Theme ParkJP

All,
I noticed in your list that a game such as James Bond 007: Nightfire has listed that cutscenes have graphical issues. You may want to consult https://dolphin-emu.org/compat/ to check for known issues that can be fixed by creating game specific config files. This can use alternate settings on a per-game basis and solve many minor issues.
The per game settings need to be created through the GUI interface of the emulator, as mentioned here:
https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=GameINI -
Wow, I truly appreciate it! Sorry about it being incorrectly imported, though. I just used Wikipedia’s list and ported it through the web option after removing the other columns via post processing.
It’s the first list on this website: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_games?darkschemeovr=1
Edit: Mario Kart Wii and Mario Party 9 rated, edit them how you see fit.
-
Guess what I just got?!?! (DolphinBar)
I will be able to test some more wii games now. So expect some more to be rated right after this ad break!
Edit: Wii Sports is rated.

I think the best way to run the games with standalone Dolphin are to add them in the gui and start them from there and not from Emulationstation, something similar to scummvm.
Why? Because a lot of gamecube games are multi disks and it's not possible to change the disks, atleast i didn't find a working solution. If i start the game from ES and choose to open the gui then i am loosing the controls.
update: The disk is changed by the gui, automatically (when the appropriate setting is enabled), but the controller stops responding when this happens.
-
@abj I do wish the GUI had gamepad support, it's not that practical to keep a mouse plugged in just for selecting games.
I haven't gotten that far in Tales of Symphonia, but how does Dolphin handle multi disc games usually?
-
@retropieuser555 I don't know if it's like psx that you have to enter the disk while the emulator is running or it is like dreamcast. SO far i just boot from disk two of Resident Evil to test how the disk swap is working.
Yes, I hope it will be possible to control Gui with gamepad.
I asked on discord, in some games emulator must be running to change the discs.
