Possible location of file containing input device information

Hello everyone,
On my Pi 3b+ I am using the RetroPie CRT-Edition (EVO 3.3 release) that is based on the following release
Retropie 4.6 (Buster).
EmulationStation V.2.9.3RP.
Retroarch v1.8.8.in combination with a Pi2Jamma adapter on my New Astro City, 6 Button (incl. Kick-Harness), 2 Player arcade cabinet with 15kHz CRT monitor.
The image works beautifully with my setup, there is however one issue I would like to understand: when I booted the image for the first time, there was NO prompt by Emulation Station to configure an input device (keyboard, joystick&buttons etc.). However my joystick as well as all 1P buttons (haven't tried 2P yet) worked right away.
Now though I am a firm believer of the saying "never change a running system", I would like to remap some of the buttons, however I fail to understand where I would need to look for the input configuration that obviously must be stored somewhere.
- es_input.cfg only contains the following keyboard related entry: <inputConfig class="pi2jamma" deviceGUID="-1" deviceName="Keyboard" type="keyboard"> but nothing that refers to joystick and buttons.
- the folder /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/autoconfig is empty, no config file here.
- in the retrorarch.cfg I can only see a the following line that seems to be related to input devices:
Joypad driver. ("udev", "linuxraw", "paraport", "sdl2", "hid", "dinput") input_joypad_driver = "udev"
Can someone please point me to the right place to look for the jostick & buttons input information ?
Thanks very much for your help !

We don't support 3rd party systems. One of the reasons why is that we don't know how the author(s) of said systems have configured it from RetroPie default. You can ask them about it, though I'm not sure if they're still active.

@mitu I don't think he is still active unfortunately.
While I appreciate that you don't support third party images, would you share a "guess" where the information pontentially could be found ?
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
