What it the official allocated ram size and is there a way to increase it

We are trying to get a 3ds emulator working and the dev who is working on it is asking about that since it will make it easier for the emulator to store textures

I know how to increase it for compiling

I just don't know if we can do that for when the emulator runs or that just not how it works

      RPi3B+ / 200GB/ RetroPie v4.5.14, RPi4 Model B 4gb / 256gb / RetroPie 4.8.2
      RPi5 4gb / 512gb / RetroPie 4.8.9 -Basic
      Maintainer of RetroPie-Extra .

If you're talking about a Pi (or any other SBC), you can't add more RAM to the board apart from what's delivered with the model you have (1G/2G/4G/etc.). You can enable compressed RAM (zram) from the Configuration section and that will get you more headroom for applications to run.

@mitu does Retropie cap out at a limit.

Like if I have. 8gig pi5 will Retropie let a emulator use what it wants or does it cap out at at 2 or 4 gig

No, it doesn't put any 'cap'. If there's any restriction, then it's coming from the OS/Mesa/Linux driver for the GPU.
