I have been digging around for a while searching for a work around.

I am using lr-imame4all as my default. It works well with my romset. I like the fact I can use the shaders. I am not able to figure out how to use the shaders with the regular mame4all. I would be perfectly ok with this setup but I need to have more control over the buttons with retroarch. It just doesn't seem like it allows much in the way of easy changes.

Also there is no way to get into the UI menu that you tab to in mame4all. This way you can adjust buttons or dip switches. I just think I am missing something. Does anyone have any ideas.

I have my setup running off an external drive all good. Just need these two little issues fixed and I'll be all set.

@TheSlimOne you can't use shaders with standalone mame4all-pi as it is not libretro (lr-). if you want a mame emulator that supports shaders AND allows you to go into the mame TAB menu, you should get a 0.78 romset and try lr-mame2003.

Thanks bud. I know know why I didn't think to try that. I think I tried that rompack at some point. Perhaps I didn't install all of it or something. I seem to remember it being WAY less roms. It definitely is not.

Thanks for the help with the shaders. Do you happen to have any idea about the retroatch button adjustment? I thought I saw something about hitting select X in game but I can't find it again.
