Outside of the 4 player X-men rom, no 4 player games are recognizing players 3 and 4.
I've launched the lr-mame2003 and 2010, and went into the dip swtches and enabled 4 player on:
      captain commando
      teenage mutant ninja turtles
      captain america & the avengers
      and several others
Players 3 and 4 are connected and DO work with x-men,
and i've verified the correct roms have been loaded,
I'm using the current version of retropie,
The mode changes so it shows the 3rd and 4th slot, but mame seems to load with a preference of only seeing 2 controllers,
is there something in the config that sets this?
      has anyone seen/resolved this?
      Thank you!

@avoryx lr-mame2010 only supports 2 players, as stated here: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/MAME#lr-mame2010-experimental

lr-mame2003 supports 4 players fine. just tried it in tnmt.zip, for example - no dip switch changes needed (for this game, anyway). i don't know why it wouldn't work for you.

If your aim here is to play these games with two controllers but still choose the player you want, try using the 2-player clones.

For example, tmnt2po lets each player choose which turtle they want to be.
