@gaavoid I did a clean install of 4.0.2 and upgraded to 4.0.3. Then I installed kodi and I was getting the same results as you. I then went to RetroPie Setup and ran Update all installed packages. When it finished I rebooted and it worked ok one time. I rebooted again as a final test and it's failing again, just like before. I'm not sure what the fix is yet.

Try without any gamepad connected. If it doesn't solve the problem, you might have a bad SD Card, try with another one.

@Rascas Looks like you are right! I disconnected the controller and kodi works fine using a keyboard. I rebooted 3 times and it still works! Now to fix the controller problem. Kodi worked with the controller before the upgrade.

Which controller ? It is known that after certain kernel version some controllers are not playing well with Kodi. You will have to wait for Kodi 17 stable version comes out for this to be fixed, hopefully.
If it is XBOX 360, there is 2 different workarounds for now already talked in this forum.

That one is defined in /usr/share/kodi/system/keymaps/joystick.Microsoft.Xbox.360.Controller.xml. You can edit that file to try to make it work. Or remove the line with that joystick name a make a new keymap. Or disable joystick support in Kodi settings, until next version comes out.

@Rascas I went to the file and deleted the line for the f310 and now I can use the retropie for gaming ok but I need the keyboard for controlling the kodi. Not a big deal and I can wait for the next version is released.

Here is a work in progress of my joystick.Microsoft.Xbox.360.Controller.xml file with Kodi support:

I talked about it on this thread:

After upgrades, I found that you need to plug in the controller for like five minutes.... Then unplug , it should vibrate and be back working, then select your kodi under ports, before you touch the controller wait till kodi comes up fully... Then try controller buttons... This should work...
