I have read up and down the internet looking for an answer to this. I see some issues that are very close to identical to mine, but not 100% the same. I would like to see if there are any words of wisdom that might help me.

      Pi Model: 2 B
RetroPie Version Used: RetroPie 4.04, Linux Raspbian Jessie 4.4.21-v7+
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website, updated with updated RetroPie-Setup Script 10/17/2016
USB Devices connected: Cana Kit Wifi Adapter (Chipset Ralink 5370), Logitech K400 Keyboard, PS3 Dualshock via USB
Controller used: Logitech K400 Keyboard, PS3 Dualshock via USB
Error messages received: no error messages, but errors in kodi_crashlog. see pastebin link below.
Guide used: i used parts of TecTipsta's YouTube Video youtube. spaces insterted to avoid thumbnail com/watch?v=beBGRwjJI60 only to add kodi as

its own system in emulation station.
File: /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/kodi/kodi.sh and have also used it in ports /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports/kodi.sh
      Emulator: NA
      Attachment of config files: kodi_crashlog - http://pastebin.com/Brwz1mQK
How to replicate the problem: Download most recent RetroPie Image from website, use Win32DiskImager to write image to
8GB SD card, power on RPI2b with SD card inserted, ensure ethernet connectivity, take remote SSH session using putty
into the device, update retropie-setup script, Update All Installed Packages, reboot, update all driver packages,
reboot, install Kodi through Manage Optional Packages, reboot, update all optional packages, reboot, run Kodi
(through ports menu and also tried in Independent Kodi tab that i created - both seem to behave identically).
Sometimes Kodi will load perfectly fine. I was able to change my skin, add repos and addons, export my skin for
saving, use various addons with no issues. When i exit and try to load kodi again, or after a reboot etc, i
      experience my issue.

I click Kodi either through the Ports tab or through the Kodi tab that i created. NOTE: i have tried launching it
with runcommand and just through a basic bash script to launch kodi and kodi-standalone.
All cases have same symptoms. i see a black screen for a short period (several seconds, maybe 10) then one of four
      things happen:

      1. I am loaded into Kodi successfully (maybe 5% of the time)
      2. i am returned back to emulationstation (maybe 90% of the time)
      3. i am loaded into Kodi for a few seconds, then it exits and goes back to emulationstation (maybe 2% of the time)
      4. i am loaded into a partial Kodi environment (maybe see the time and weather information on top header) and screen
is frozen.(maybe 1% of the time)
      5. one time i was put into a loop, and i tried pressing f4 to go to terminal. everything was severly buggy, and
iterminal was "broken" - very slow, couldnt type effectively, and it still continued looping the broken load of kodi
        (maybe 2% of the time)

      Please help! Thanks in advance!

Did you try unplugging your controllers? (I think the ps3 controller can crash kodi)

Kodi 17 should resolve these issues if that sorts it.

[edit] yep - looks like ps3 controller.

@BuZz I have seen this several times but was unsure if it was relevant for PS3 DS controllers, since ive only seen posts referring the ps4 dS controllers. i will try this again tonight.

Are there any known workarounds for this? perhaps to modify my Kodi.sh file to disable the ds3 controller prior to loading kodi, or maybe using the runcommand to do this, and then re-enable it on exiting kodi?

I suspect there is, but I don't know of any off hand. Unplug ps3 controller before launching Kodi / wait a little longer for Kodi 17 ;-)

hooked in to a coworkers monitor via hdmi. tested kodi several times without a ps3 controller plugged in and it worked fine. Thanks for the words of wisdom BuZz.
