      Hi guys,

I can get my original PS3 controller to pair to the PI3 with a bluetooth dongle but not with the onboard bluetooth. Running PI3 model B, with retropie 4.1

Also what is this error ? Maybe its causing an issue

I've got the same problem. I just started a thread about it. I can connect my controllers with the cable, but they won't connect wirelessly, and I get that same error as you. :( can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

The error above happens I believe when the ps3controller driver is installed as the standard bluetooth daemon is disabled. The isue may be an update to the ps3controller driver which was in place for a day which had a bug. Try updating retropie-setup and removing/re-installing the ps3controller driver and repairing.
