      ok, so help, help, help...
I'm on ubuntu 16.10. I installed retropie through the script and the steam controller drivers through the same script, but they removed the controller function from steam....so I removed them....now, I cannot get my steam controller to work at all. I've tried completely removing retropie, reinstalling steam, reinstalling steam-devices, and everything else I can think of...my question is, what did the steam controller driver script do, and how do I return to the default function of my controller? This is critically important, essentially retropie broke my system.

ok, after 2 days, I finally solved the problem..by default steam stores, the file /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules

for some reason the retropie script also installs /ect/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules

the file in /ect contained the instructions for xbox and keyboard which was overridding the /lib rules.
I removed the ect file which should not be there and everything is now working. (I actually removed both files and reinstalled steam-devices)
