Help-activating SNES controller wired to GPIO PINS

I decided to try my hand at building a portable retro gaming console out of a SNES controller. I was going to use a generic SNES USB controller but when I gutted it, it was very cheap and flimsy inside. I used this YouTube video. The problem I have is getting the controller to work. How to setup GPIO/DB9 gamecon drivers . It all seems very different in retropie 4.1. I am good with hardware and soldering..... not so strong in Linux. Some guidance would be greatly appreciated. Unit is up and running with a keyboard attached.

Does anybody have ideas how to get GPIO working on SNES OEM controller hardwired to Pizero board?

That video worked fine for me with an original SNES controller. What problem are you having?
