MAME ROW #8: Pac & Pal
-
@meleu
My ROM set show that Galivan Cosmo Police (12/26/1985) is the parent galivan.zip and that galivan2.zip is (12/16/1985). Was this changed in different ROM sets? -
Hm.
I'd vote for any other than Fatal Fury, but that's me. Both look nifty, though I actually didn't know Pac & Pal - looks to be an interesting variant on Pacman, and good for high-scores.
Voted for that!

Real Bout Fatal Fury / Real Bout Garou Densetsu
Pac & Pal
Galivan - Cosmo Police
-
we haven't had a fighting game yet, and the fatal fury series are great. voted! :)

well, I'm using 0.78. My suggestion is to use the galivan.zip of your romset. Should be the same game, right?
-
@dankcushions Second vote for 4-letter warning game :)
-
I can't get Pac & Pal to work (and I don't download full sets, so I have no idea how to tell what version I have) but it doesn't work with lr-fblpha, lr-mame2003, or lr-imame4all, so I'm giving up on that.
I suck at fighting games, but Fatal Fury looks like it has a lot of the King of Fighters characters in it, that's neat.
I've always loved platformers, so Galivan is looking really interesting. I'll have to give that one a bit of a chance before I vote.
-
@obsidianspider Pac&Pal with lr-mam4all is runnig fine. Wait 20 seconds with the messed up looking screen - it works 100% :)
I don't like PacMan at all - even this... seems to me PacMans throw up blue vomit as special.
-
@cyperghost I must have the "wrong" version of the ROM. I'm on the latest version of RetroPie and lr-imame4all just goes back to EmulationStation after a few seconds.
-
@obsidianspider Well it isn't a game worth to play imho :)
-
@cyperghost Now I feel bad for having voted for it :) I suppose I should try the ROMS before voting...
-
@pjft The world ends now ;)
About the Pac&Pal...That was my opinion only! Long time ago I was gifted with a Atari 2600 VCS with PacMan included. I think I played it much to long ... and this ended in eternal personal hate to the whole series.
See here why:
@obsidianspider
The game consits of two files.- pacnpal.zip
- pacnpal2.zip
Ending in two entries of ES (Pac&Pal and Pac&Pal (older)) but the older version runs pacnpal2.zip (Is that serious?)
Galivan is cool, reminds me a bit of Kid Chameleon on the Sega Genesis... but as @dankcushions said... We never got a beat'n'up in the ROW, up to now.
-
@cyperghost Yeah, I got pacnpal2.zip and it's still not working. Oh well. It's only Pac-Man.

I feel your pain. 'Ms. Pac-Man' and 'Jr. Pac-Man' for the 2600 mended a lot of fences, but for many, the damage was done.
-
In Fatal Fury, the "Game Over" guy's voice is hilarious. :)

I like your avatar :) We speak about mending fences ;)

@GtBFilms I gave it a good try, but I'm not going to go crazy over trying to get it to work.

I like your avatar
Hah! Thanks. I love that little guy. Although, I'm not sure why Atari felt the need to make him anatomically correct.

An interesting selection this week - I thought Real Bout Fatal Fury would be my clear choice, but persevered with Pac & Pal and actually quite liked it once I worked out the rules.
This is what I worked out so far:
Every time Pacman turns over a card he get a certain time to pick up the revealed fruit. He can have three overturned cards at once. If he gets the fruit in time he gets a bonus score, if not, it disappears. There are things that look like space invaders, their cards have an 'S' on them. after picking up those Pacman can fire a gun/beam/smoke to freeze ghosts for extra points. After the last item has gone, its the end of the level - so there is a tactic in getting the 'S' cards first. (if you leave them until last, you don't get the time to freeze the ghosts for extra points)Meanwhile that little green guy (who doesn't harm pacman) steals fruits and takes them to the centre. If you catch him you get the points, if he gets the fruit to the centre, you don't.
In each level the same cards seem to always have the same fruit on them, so you can learn the correct order to do each level.
Every 2 levels there is a bonus level, with cards either revealing points, that green guy (extra points?) or the red ghost - end of bonus level. In contrast, the placement of the cards in the bonus level appears to be totally random.
I also gave Galivan a try, which seemed to be a strange hybrid between ghosts and goblins/strider and games like that. It is really difficult as soon as you lose your power-ups though.
But as mentioned, we've not had a beat em up yet, so I'll need to put some more thought into my vote!
