I want to teach my students about using the raspberry pi and making some sort of coding activity. I love the pi table, however I cannot teach them about downloading roms.

Is there any games that are open sourced that I can use? Is pacman or galaga?

Well change the search term ....
instead of "open source" USE "homebrew"

For example here is a homebrew version of Donkey Kong for the SNES for free download.

I believe that Dinothawr, Micropolis, Super Mario War, SuperTux and Xrick are open source games.

OpenTTD is open only if you use the OpenMSX and OpenSFX asset packs.

I'm not sure if Giana's Return is open source but it's freeware.

Also Doom, Quake/Quake III Arena, Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem 3D will install the shareware versions of each game.

Another option, if the individual student already owns Minecraft, they could play that as well using their personal login for the game.

Last, I won't post any links but there are a few freeware arcade ROMs (update @rbaker posted the link below):
"In general, publishers want to hold onto the rights to their classic properties, mostly so that when the time comes they can re-release them as part of a retro game compilation. But in a few cases, the rights holders have given their permission for the games to be freely distributed."

No, but go to the official MAME site you will find some roms that have been released for free, non-commercial use so are ideal for school projects.

In the spirit of 'Classic Kong', another homebrew game that is sure to capture their interest is 'Fix-it Felix Jr.', programed and released by Airwalk Studios for free on their website for the Sega Genesis. As you might expect, the game is a faithful recreation of the in-movie game (complete with voice samples) from Disney's 'Wreck-it Ralph'. Airwalk Studios have since shut their doors and moved on to other endeavors, but the download can be found in many other locations.

              Cheat Codes:

[Marathon Mode]: Down Right A C Up Left A
              [Blood Code]: A B A C A B B
              [Extra Time]: A C C Right Up A Left

Blood code doesn't work with marathon mode.
Seems to be some confusion on this, it doesn't work because Ralph never gets thrown off the building

              Game Genie Codes:

Oh yes - I answered with a Rom because he askeds for downloading Roms. The games you named are also good examples. I misunderstood something.

                @mediamogul
                Nice gameplay - thank you
You can download RecalBox and extract the Roms folder there are also some homebrews located
