Refresh Rate on Some Arcade Titles?
-
I could have posted the topic as "Mortal Kombat refresh rate" but this may apply to other games. I notice flickering and slight lines (maybe as my eyes adjust) when playing Mortal Kombat arcade games on Mame2003. It is more noticeable on large areas like the blue sky in MK1. This possibly has to do with the lower refresh rate of the games on Midway's hardware. Does anyone else notice this issue when playing your Pi? I play on a 60Hz display with no special settings on. It does not appear to be Vsync (tearing).

What hardware are you using? The Mortal Kombat titles are listed as having issues on the compatibility list.
I'm terrible at fighting games, but I just tried MK on my Pi 3 and it didn't have any flickering. I did notice a bit of slow down when going through the list of challengers.

Its an RPi3. All I use is the CRT-pi shader. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. I don't notice on other Mame2003 games other than MK, but maybe Rampage World Tour may do it. Mortal Kombat is noticeably better performing (frame rate) on Mame4all, except the sound is totally scratchy.

A lot of arcade games have weird refresh rates which will probably make the games play at slightly the wrong speed. I'm not sure if that's true. MK and Rampage World Tour are 53.2 Hz so playing them on a 60 Hz TV will affect the sound/video sync. I don't know how it really works, just a theory.

Yes this is what I suspected. I guess the emulation needs some extra work or unfortunately the performance wall of RPi3 will be hit for games like MK2 and 3.

mame2003 already uses the right refresh for midway games. see https://github.com/libretro/mame2003-libretro/blob/7b55725e744ac9702db092f996e2fca2276146b2/src/includes/midyunit.h#L11

i would turn off the CRT-PI shader first. MK games have a higher resolution than a lot of arcade games so the shader will produce artifacts if you're not running it with integer scaling on.

@dankcushions , I will look into this. The thread may be misleading because it may not be a refresh rate issue, only what I suspected to be.
