Hi. Building an arcade cabinet and brand new to retropie/raspberry pi. I've ordered the 2 player build your own arcade panel kit (joysticks, buttons, pcb, etc.)from x-arcade and assembled it with my own setup. Now that I'm connected, anytime I use a rom that works with mame2003(mortal kombat I/II/III, pacman, donkey kong are what I've tried.) it seems the joystick not working is the common denominator. All other button work fine. Arrow keys on USB keyboard I also have connected aren't working either. Any help would be great. Thanks

      Pi Model: 3 model B
RetroPie Version Used: newest version(downloaded 11/26)
Built From: Pre made SD Image
USB Devices connected:keyboard, homemade control panel with arcade parts
      Controller used: homemade control panel
      Error messages received: n/a
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant): n/a
      Guide used: n/a
      File: n/a
      Emulator: mame2003
      Attachment of config: n/a
How to replicate the problem: when mame2003 is used, other emulators work fine.

have you started the emulator and pressed the tab key on your keyboard?

Tab also seems to not work on mk I, II, III. Pacman it popped up but the arrow keys won't let me navigate it

you don't need to set controls up for each game you should have a general setting option that will work on every game

I've tried the controller setup from the emulator station start menu, I've tried tab during the games(also not working)and I've also tried to set it up through retro arch input menu. None of these have made a difference. The emulator itself isn't allowing arrow keys to work in any game loaded with it.

When I use a wired saitek joypad I have, everything works fine but that's not what I'll be using permanently for an arcade cabinet.

@cif140 said in Joystick d-pad not working in mame2003:

that doesn't make much sense to me unless you've somehow accidentally created per-game configurations with tab disabled, or are running pacman in a different mame emulator than mame2003.

is it possible to give us the output of /dev/shm/runcommand.log after you load and quit a game where tab works and after a game where it doesn't?

Ok thx I will later today when I get home. In the meantime is there a way to check and see if changed something by accident? As I mentioned before I'm new so I'm struggling with figuring it out. Thanks

@cif140 not really :( but assuming you're using the mame-libretro folder (??) delete everything in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2003/cfg/ and check that there's no .cfg files in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2003/ - that should cover you.

dumb question but are the controls working fine with other emulators? If its fine then ignore this question.
have you tried binding the joystick movement to your buttons? seems odd that the arrow keys are also disabled.

Dank: I'm using the arcade folder. Can I delete cfg files in there instead?

Trix: I'm able to set the movement as something other than arrow keys and it works fine... so that tells me there is an issue with the arrows
