      Please vote: http://www.strawpoll.me/11752608

We will check the most voted game on Wednesday. So we have Monday and Tuesday for experimentations.

      What is the MAME ROW?

MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME ROMset to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!

There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.

Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the results.

The current week's game thread is just where there are more people interacting/talking about the game(s). Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous "rounds" topics (links below).

These "rules" are constantly being improved!

Explaining the randomness of the process

I took the 0.78 compatibility list and applied the following filters (in this order):

      1. Parent: (empty)
      2. Rpi 3 Status: (empty), OK, Untested
      3. Rpi 2 Status: OK, Untested
      4. Rpi 1 Status: Untested
      5. Manufacturer: clear the "bootleg" checkbox

Saved a new spreadsheet with only the results of those filters here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13Q7QEqV5lUo662nvAC3zS_AvQvsjspEcGHVhaHcyzbI/edit?usp=sharing

And then went to www.random.org and generated a random number between 2 and 2185 (ignoring 1 because of the column headers).

      Links to the previous "rounds"

      • Phoenix (not randomly chosen)
      • New Rally-X (not randomly chosen)
      1. Bosconian
      2. Blue's Journey / Raguy
      3. Lizard Wizard
      4. 4-D Warriors
      5. Raiga - Strato Fighter
      6. Pang!
      7. Air Duel
      8. Pac & Pal
      9. Puyo Puyo 2

What a great selection. I'm jealous of you all as I won't be able to play this week. :/

I believe you may benefit from configuring rotary controls on forgotten worlds, and assigning then to the shoulder buttons of the gamepad. Let me know if that's the case and I can try to look up the steps to do it.

@meleu did you not get the memo? I was organizing the "RetroPie ROW getaway extravaganza" trip! I was surprised you didn't vote for the trip destination :)

Hope the audit at work went well. What is your vote by the way? I would have voted forgotten worlds if I was playing, if it's easy to play on an emulator.

Though SPY also looks pretty neat! I would have tried both and then decided, I suppose.

Sorry @meleu, yesterday was busy for me and I didn't have time to try them out until this morning before work.

S.P.Y. takes some getting used to on the flying/shoot-em-up stage, but once you get past that the beat-em-up is fairly standard.

Wrestle War seemed like a lot of button mashing to me, and the fact that the game always wants your player to be at the bottom of the screen and flips everything to do so is disrupting.

Forgotten Worlds seems like just a normal side-scrolling shooter, but the fact that you have a life bar instead of a one-hit death is nice.

My vote goes to S.P.Y. because it has multiple styles of play and it keeps things interesting.

isn't it?! every time it happens it i completely lose my perception of reality. it's like an interactive escher drawing.

@meleu Sorry I'm working away from home just now so haven't had the chance to test out this weeks selection. Will hopefully manage to take a look and vote before the deadline though!

                      Pretty good selection this week.

I liked the old-school feel of S.P.Y, although it's not really made up it's mind whether it wants to be a Shinobi clone or a clone of a game I can't remember the name of, but had you play as a soldier advancing into the screen in sort of 3D while a bunch of pixellated enemies poured towards you.

I loved the cartoon style of Wrestle War, but as others have mentioned it doesn't appear to require too much skill apart from button mashing, and the flipped view thing is disorientating and unnecessary.

Forgotten Worlds looks awesome. As @pjft mentioned, it needs rotary controls configured. I configured a PS3 controller right joystick to perform rotation left and right. Luckily the fire button will auto-fire if held down, so it's just about playable like that.

Would still certainly benefit from the proper original controller though I reckon.

I pressed TAB on MAME2003 to bring up this menu, then changed the input for this specific game only:
                      0_1480467318627_rotary1.jpg

I set the Dial Analog Dec and Dial Analog Inc controls to my PS3 right stick left and right. Everything else I left as default.
                      0_1480467324608_rotary2.jpg

It still seems a bit haphazard to control though, so this week my vote is going to go to Wrestle War!

I'll probably keep all of these on my cab to play around with though.

Forgotten Worlds won. A shooter with a auto fire button? Great! Now let me see how can I substitute the rotation device...

                          Edit: added images.
                          What I did (RetroPie, mame2003):

                          1. Needs a keyboard or a joystick with the R2 button.
                          2. Press tab on keyboard or R2 on joystick to acces the MAME2003 Main Menu.

                          0_1480514781831_20161130_120508.jpg

                          1. Go to Input (this game)

                          2. Go to the end of the list. There are 2 Dial configs for each player. The first Dial makes your warrior rotate anticlockwise, and the second one makes him rotate clockwise.

                          0_1480514805016_20161130_120524.jpg

As I'm using an arcade controller I put the rotation buttons next to the fire button. Maybe players with joystick will prefer other buttons (such as L and R).

@meleu Thanks! I didn't know you could get to another menu by plugging in a keyboard and pressing Tab

you can also press R2 to access this menu, if you have a controller where this is bound.

although i think really the issue is that this game apparently doesn't have sensible defaults. i need to check.

@dankcushions I think the defaults are decent. To be honest I didn't even think about rotating until someone here mentioned it.

                                            Sorry for (my) confusion, there.

I'll have a go on the rpi tonight, looks like @meleu 's instructions should do the trick, thanks.
