MAME ROW #12: Frenzy
-
Even though Gauntlet was one of my all time favorite co-op arcade games, I'm going to have to agree with @mviars
-
@backstander Haven't tried any - haven't had the time, and after this week I won't have the chance to play until early January.
Still, for this week I voted Frenzy then - followed your guidance and recommendation. Hopefully I'll get to play it at least once or twice.
-
Then let's go frenzy this week!
-
My frenzy is completely quiet. I downloaded the MAME Sample fullset from progettosnaps and didn't find the frenzy sample.
The youtube frenzy video @GtBFilms posted has sounds (and some very funny robotic voices). Are any of you guys able to put sounds to this game?
-
The difficulty really increases when the enemies start to shoot. The good thing is that when they shoot each other you still earn the points. :-)
When I play MAME ROW I start with the goal of at least break the default hi-score. As this game doesn't have one, I started with the goal of get an extra-life (3000 points). And I got it:
I'm waiting for you guys! :-)
-
@meleu I'll check my cab when I get home, but I definitely have sound - it might be the same sample set as Berzerk uses as it's the sequel to that game and very similar.
I'll check tonight and send you the sample set if I have it.
-
@GtBFilms My fault. I've just realized that the compatibility list has a column for samples. And the sample for frenzy indeed is berzerk. Thanks!

Overlay coming ....maybe tomorrow...
-
@UDb23 OK, I'm going to create the github repository for the MAME ROW overlays (and some others). Do you have a github account?
-
just to start: https://github.com/meleu/MAME-ROW-overlays
@UDb23 hope you don't mind that I've put your files there...
-
@meleu No github account.
OK to put files there too, as long as you keep author credits :-) )New overlay incoming... right now!
-
Overlay(s) ready: here
-
FYI: found some interesting "enhanced" (but unofficial) sound samples, not only for Berzerk/Frenzy, here.
-
@meleu Can please specify on Github that these overlays are NOT FOR COMMERCIAL USE.
I want to avoid, as already happened with other retropie related stuff, that they could be used on some Retropie Image sold on ebay or similar. -
@UDb23 great work! This is one of the things I like about the MAME ROW, as well as discovering the occasional new gem, I probably end up hacking about with enhancements almost as much as playing the games!
A repository of these custom overlays would be a great resource.
-
Fantastic overlay as usual. I hope to be able to find a bit of time to compete this week. 'Frenzy' would have been what I voted for anyway and it appears as though it was a landslide.
-
@UDb23 will do! It would be my next question. :-)
-
@GtBFilms Most of the fun is customizing Retropie and trying new things;. some times even more than actually playing.
-
@UDb23 Thanks for the overlay, it's great! I ended up using it straight away.
I usually end up flattening it with a layer of patrickm-scanlines1920x1080.png so that I have overlay and scanlines in the same overlay - no need to waste CPU on rendering a CRT filter or something on top of the overlay. It's not perfect but it's good enough for the most part - you can see the result in the screenshot. :)
@meleu I was having a terrible time even beating 3000, but then I got lucky this last one and got 4995 :) I doubt I'll be able to play any more this week - or, as matter of fact, until the second week of January or so, as I'm going home with the family for Xmas.
As such, a happy holidays everyone, and wishing you all a great Retro 2017! :)
