I have Mario Bros. working in FBA, but the sounds are either wrong or missing. It won't run in either mame2003 or mame2010 either.

Does anyone have a sound solution for this game?

Early Nintendo arcade cabinets used a very unique sound production system that is not supported in FBA.

It won't run in either mame2003...

Make sure you have the required game ROM files from the 0.78 MAME ROM set specifically, as well as the necessary sound sample file (mario.zip) installed at /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples/ and it should run complete with sound.

The samples download link to http://www.progettosnaps.net/samples/ also seem to neglect the early Nintendo titles. Do you know if this is just an omission on their part, or are these games still not supported for sound in FBA?

@dankcushions I put the zip in there and the running sound works, but nothing else.

It's fully playable on lr-fbalpha but without sound.

I re-formated the zip file I had using that tool, but the resulting zip won't run on any system.

that site is a 'last resort'. if you download a full romset it will normally have a complete (for that set) samples archive along with it. my fba 0.2.97.39 and mame 0.78 sets do.

Make sure you have the any parent ROMs that might be required as well. I play 'Mario Bros' through lr-mame2003 often and have never had issues.

When I did the conversion I selected non-merged sets, was that the correct option? It created three zips - mario.zip, mariojp.zip and masao.zip. I put all three in the directory, but mame2003 still won't start.

Assuming that you were using the 0.78 dat file, it should have been fine. It's a total cop-out suggestion, but you may just want to download the "MAME 2003 Reference Set" and get the ROMs from there.
