-
I have a sanwa joystick and it has a usb encoder which you connect all the buttons too and then plug in to usb on the pi. do I have to manually setup controls or is there an automatic way or is there a better option for me as I am trying to build a bar top arcade.

I'm very sorry and I'm not tech savvy could you help me or shall I remove my post?

@tubz I completely understand, and that's okay.
The documentation can seem overwhelming at first, and it is a lot of information.
But you can do this. Start here: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation
If you get stuck somewhere along the way, try searching around the wiki page. Then try searching on this forum (90% chance someone else had a similar problem and found a solution). If that doesn't work, try googling around a bit.
If you still can't find a solution, then you're welcome to ask questions here on this forum; and all of the work you've done will make it WAY easier for us to help you out and explain what might be wrong.
Right now you're standing outside of a car asking how you shift gears. Try turning on the car first, sitting in the seat, trying out some of the levers, etc. Then when we explain that it's an automatic and you don't have to shift gears, you'll know what we mean.

For example... you don't mention what USB controller board you are using.
I am using 2 x Sanwa JLF joysticks via an Ultimarc IPAC2. But I'm not going to explain at length what you need to do if you're not even using the same board :P
