2 PS4 controllers acting as player one

Friends, i need some help here...i have a pi2 and just installed it with retropie 4.1. Ive paired both my ps4 controllers via usb and both working are working in emulation station. When i play 2 player game like mario world in snes, i can only use one of the controllers for both players 1 and 2....when i play arcade like mame, both players 1 & 2 are being controlled simultaneously on same controller...ive gone into the Retroarch GUI and set player1 to use digital index wireless controller #1 and player2 to use digital index wireless controller #2 but to no avail....ive read the wiki page and also searched the forum but not able to find the answer....can someone tell me what im doing wrong?????
