RattyDave V2 - No in-game input (controllers or keyboard)

*edit: Case closed. No solution found so started from scratch, but I'm leaving this thread in place as a search result for this "rattydave v2" image

The title sums it up really. I've installed RattyDavev2 and seem to have everything looking/sounding great: All controllers are configured and navigate menus perfectly.
But there is no response from any input once I am in a game. This is the same for every emulator and I'm force to pull the power plug as my only way to reboot.
I'm a newb and just trying to set up a fun little console for my boys, doing so from scratch would be way over my head I think so the .img seemed like the best option. I configured the controllers in Emulation Station, and again via the Controls menu in Attract Mode.
I'm sure it's something I've missed, but I can't get anything to play.

@Hiroshi I'm also a newb, but went through something similar.
You need to open Retroarch in the Retropie menu.
Then go to settings, then Input.
Here you will see the Input User 1 Binds menu. Just hit Bind All and it will take you through the mapping. This will set the default key bindings for all emulators.
Remember to save before you quit.

Thanks @theantnest
I've never opened/used Retroarch before, not sure if I have a working set-up.
It displays:
1.3.6 - No Core
But I can't open anything from the Main Menu. I can move the selector arrow with my arrow keys, but no amount of key bashing will open Settings, or anything else.
Do you have this rattydave set-up? I think it may be a little complicated for my first attempt!

Actually, being in the RetroArch menu is similar to being in an emulator, none of my controllers seem to register (except arrow keys here). Frustrating, have to pull the plug again.
