I was wondering, could retropie use/support mugen homebrew games??

I just saw the best 2d Dragon ball Z mugen ever lol

That would be really cool if you could install M.U.G.E.N. fighting engine on retropie but I seriously doubt the Raspberry pi and linux is compatible with it but i could be wrong, The version of M.U.G.E.N. i have on my PC i know wont run on the PI. but still a Really cool idea. No coding skills here to figure it out how to get it to work but maybe some one else has the knowledge to do it.

I think this would be an absolutely amazing addition and it's customization component is very much in the spirit of RetroPie in general.

Would something like this not be a suitable candidate to work from: http://paintown.org/#/home

that looks like it might work but i dont have the knowledge or skills to get it working on retropie, im learning retropie as i go a long as it is, maybe buZz or herb_fargus might be able to give you a better answer if it is possible or not to implement into retropie.

It would indeed. Maybe something will change in the future.

Might be worth seeing if ikemen will compile and run: https://osdn.net/users/supersuehiro/pf/ikemen/wiki/FrontPage . I'm not sure if it uses a custom compiler, I think it does (to compile the .ssz files).

ikemen tries to support most of the state controllers MUGEN does, it seems.

Also, the old DOS version of M.U.G.E.N does run a dos emulator.

Well if anyone is still interested in this you may like to know i have a half working port in progress for paintown that ive been working on its a bit buggy atm and i dont have much free time so cant garantee a definite time i will finish it but it looks promising so far pretty much the bug list is as follows

                        Progress & Issues
                        Arcade Mode
Runs full speed a few hiccups in fps when enemies explode
Screen is dimmed with Command Line visible running code whilst in a level

                        M.u.g.e.n Mode
Character screen Crashes to command line
Command line visible behind mugen title screen

Joystick Fully Works aswell but you need a keyboard to initially configure it
tested with xbox 360 controller & Generic usb snes style controller

thats pretty much the only issues ive got so far and it probly stems from a bad compilation i did for allegro i do a scratch build at some point to test my theory but all things considered the last attempt to run this i saw from someone they where only getting 3 or 4 fps ingame so fingers crossed i can make some progress on this i may attempt to build with SDL at some point and see how that goes i remember sdl not fairing too well in performance though from when i last saw this being ported by someone else but hey ho w shall see :D

will do again cant garantee a release time though on a side note a little research showed me that the crash on mugen seems to be a bug in the latest 3.6.1 release of paintown on certan systems so i may rollback to 3.6.0 or an early 3.6.1 revision and see if that gets rid of the crash as for the command line being visible in gameplay it only happens on areas where a transparent png is being drawn so i know roughly where to look for that issue

another issue i noticed was in arcade mode after a little testing i tried to play with an AI partner which for some reason caused the game to lag quite a bit so thats somthing else i need to look into hopefully i can make some progress on this as i really want some fighting games on my pi :D

again cant garantee a release time

Take your time. Even if nothing comes of this, I'm sure we all appreciate you looking into it.

I hear you. The addition of Paintown would be a crazy big deal to every Pi-owning fighting game fan out there. Good luck in your efforts!

just a small progress update compiling via sdl was a no go as i thought the last guy that tried it had 3fps using that and i had a similer problem reverting to an older code revision pre 3.6.1 did fix the crash on mugen though i only tried good old kung fu man so not sure abou compatability still have fps issues in areas with allegro compiler but it runs a lot smoother and mugen was pretty twitchy had the occasional bad allocation CTD without much info provided and i still have the problem of the command line being visible under anything that has transparency

give it a bit of tweaking and i reckon it will work well ona pi3 but anything below would require someone to optimize it which is beyond me :P still gonna try and iron out these bugs and try and fix the fps issues where i can

still dabbling with it not having much luck at the moment the bor portion of paintown runns pretty well but so far any attempts to utilize the mugen portion of paintown results in codedumps the main menu is pretty much all i have running in mugen right now and it also lags
