      EDIT:

I took @lilbud's advice and started a Google Form.

      Take the Survey here!

Hello everybody, I want to know what Systems people use most with RetroPie.

I'm curious which Systems are the most popular. I've compiled a list of just about every folder I could find that could be used by EmulationStation (for games, ports, kodi and settings, on both RetroPie and PC) and it's come to over 85 systems. That's a lot to keep track of.

My personal list goes like this:

      • FinalBurn Alpha
      • Game Boy
      • MAME
      • MegaDrive
      • NES
      • PC Engine
      • PSX
      • ScummVM
      • Sega 32X
      • SNES

As you can see, I only use 10 Systems. There are other Systems I might consider one day, like Game Boy Advance, N64, maybe some Ataris, but for now I'm happy with the ones I'm familiar with.

But that's the problem; I want to make more themes for you wonderful people, but I don't have time to make them for 85+ different Systems, I want to know which Systems are used the most, then I can aim my efforts at them, and then take requests for specific Systems afterwards.

      • Is Atari 2600 used by more people than Atari 5200? What about the other Ataris?
      • Do more people use Genesis or MegaDrive?
      • PC Engine or TurboGraphx-16?
      • There are many I've never heard of, like BBC Micro, Coco, Colecovision, Intellivision, Amstrad CPC and Odyssey2. How popular are they?

As far as I'm aware, this forum doesn't have a polling system, so I figure I'll use the second post on this thread as the poll itself, which I'll update as more people respond.

Awesome, thanks for the reply @lilbud. I'll look into strawpoll (probably better than manually updating the second post each time).

@lilbud: Strawpoll only allows up to 30 options... I have 86. I'll keep looking for an online poll thing.

@lilbud: I didn't know Google Forms were a thing, but it doesn't surprise me. I have made one and put the link in the first post.

I have already filled in the responses by @mediamogul. @lilbud and @Jeck11, so you guys don't need to fill in the poll again.

I changed a couple of system names (eg: Playstation 1 to PSX - Playstation 1), but it removed the points for those systems, so I added them back in. I also added a couple of different MAMEs.

@mattrixk said in Poll: What Systems Do You Use?:

                          • There are many I've never heard of, like BBC Micro, Coco, Colecovision, Intellivision, Amstrad CPC and Odyssey2. How popular are they?

One of the reasons I really like the Retropie package is that it supports a lot of the more obscure systems.
I think the Vectrex is a great system (I own one) but the emulator is a convenient way to play some of its great games. (Though I have to say it definitely has some sound issues.)
I also actively use 2600, 5200 (when I can get it to work), 7800, the Sega 32X, the TG-16, the Odyssey 2 (a really underrated system), the Virtual Boy...

And really? You've never never heard of the Intellivision or Colecovision? Wow - there are so many great pre-NES games that a lot of younger folks have never had the pleasure of playing...

@LS650 I had the original Gameboy when I was younger (fond memories) and a MegaDrive when I was a bit older. I also have vague recollections of having a Master System at some point, but that may have been a fever dream. Next thing I know, my brother had a PS1, then a few years later I had an XBOX. Aside from some friends with a NES or SNES, I was never really exposed to any other systems.

I have a GBA SP, (still have it.) NES, Atari 2600, PSone and I'll be getting a genesis in a month or 2.

@mattrixk That's the thing, the Retropie gives you the perfect tool to explore and experience these cool old systems. To buy some old systems, say a Vectrex or a Virtual Boy, could be hundreds of dollars, but emulation gives you the chance to experience what they are like to game on.

@LS650 True. My wife grew up with a Vectrex, so I tried to get that working for her, but I've had no real luck with it. As for others, I barely get time to play games as it is. My Pi is mostly a media center for watching movies/tv off my NAS drive.

@lilbud: You reminded me, I still have an SP (the folding one before the DS) in a box somewhere. I might pull it out and have a go, see if it still works. I was playing an isometric Star Wars game, but couldn't get passed the Droideka. Put it down and never picked it back up. It's funny, I can't remember if it was red, blue or purple...

@mattrixk I had the clamshell blue one, I swear those are indestructible. Dropped one down a flight of concrete stairs, not even a scratch.

                                        PC-Engine
                                        MasterSystem

Those are I think the must be inside systems.
Then there are Atari 2600 and 7800, to be honest I have no idea what the difference between all the Ataris are they all look the same to me game-wise.

And then of course the america-nised versions of MegaDrive and PC-Engine I think an alternative logo inside the theme folder should suffice?

I personally use 4 systems of which one I copied multiple times to create CPS, Psikyo and NeoGeo.
                                        Something like this;

                                        SNES
                                        NES
                                        MegaDrive
                                        FBAlpha
                                        NeoGeo (using FBA system setting)
Capcom Play System (using FBA system setting)
                                        Psikyo (using FBA system setting)

That makes 7 systems but actually using only 4.

Just add a basic system selection in your theme and make the others on request.

Yes I did fill out the survey.
Btw. I was not the one that clicked all of them. ;)

Psikyo was a Japanese video game company specialized mostly in vertically scrolling shoot 'em ups and erotic mahjong games.
Some of the shooters are Gunbird, Gunbird 2, Samurai Aces, Aero Fighters, Cannon Spike, Zero Gunner 1 & 2 etc....

I just like to keep my favorite shoot em ups in a separate system. So it is not a real system per se.
