I created a project a long time ago, close to version 1 of retropie, inside a NES and I love my theme and settings but wanted to update the retropie version. Is there a way to do that without impacting my theme, games, coverart, and splash screen?

@demost we would be able to, at least, answer your question if you were able to provide useful info about your system. Just like the read-this-first post recommends.

@meleu this was the guide I used, there is also a life hacker link but it seems the info on that site has been updated since 2013. http://jamesparsons.com/2013/11/raspberry-nes-project

            I also used this video

@demost RetroPie from v3.8 onwards (iirc) only works on Raspbian/Debian Jessie 8. You will most likely have Squeeze or Wheezy. I believe you can update but I am informed a fresh start is the recommended route to take.

@demost You could of course back up all your personalised settings, theme, art, roms etc and transfer them across to a brand new image.

@demost I would recommend the official documentation.

                  https://retropie.github.io/RetroPie-Docs/First-Installation/

from an image that old. just start fresh from scratch. it is much easier now than it used to be.

If you read the documentation it will answer 99% of your questions: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/

@BuZz thanks, I know how to make a back up image, I'm looking to do a fresh install now because my version of retropie doesn't have an update option. But I want to back up my configuration, spashsceen, Roms, cover art, and theme. Is the folder tree the same on the new versions? Could I just copy and paste those folders?

@demost A lot of stuff has changed - you will need to study new configs vs old etc.
