Re: Using custom overlays with console emulators

Hi, Im relatively new with Retropie. I want to add overlays, and I've been search everywhere for a tutorial on them and can't find any help.

I'm just looking to install basic console overlays. I have downloaded all the files, dropped them into
opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/overlay but can't seem to get the option to show up for overlays when i go into retroarch by hitting select x during a game.

Any advise of reference to a tutorial on how to enable overlays would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

Thanks, that's a good start. I got it working with the default layovers, now I got to learn to modify the files so I can use the custom console layovers. This shouldn't be too hard as the vid you referenced shows how to modify the config files.

Originally, before seeing this video, I went into retropie settings, installed the layovers option. I then got the default/pre-installed layovers to work with the consoles, of course the screen size was off. But, for some reason when I placed my custom layovers in the same file location. Then selected them through the configedit menu, they would not show up when starting a game. I know something was happening though, because the whole screen would be darker.

Do you have any tips for getting them to work this way?

          Thanks,

Thanks, So I got that to work. But now I'm trying to use some other console overlays i downloaded. I am using filezilla to add files to my retro pie folders.

I found the location of all the .cfg and .png files and added my genesis overlay (.cfg and .png ) files to this folder.

Then when starting a game I hit select X for retroarch to start, I go to /settings/on screen display/on-screen overlay. Then i locate and add the genesis.cfg, the problem is when I exit retroarch I can hear the game but the screen is black. I've double checked the config files for each and they are identical. So I have no idea why i can't get my overlay to show up. When I select Any of the default overlays they work no problem.

            Thanks

Have you had This problem? or if not do you know why this is happening?

            Thanks,

I could have sworn overlays were in the docs but perhaps not:

may be a good addition to this page:

              https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Shaders-and-Smoothing/

or do we want it on a separate page. paging @dankcushions what do you think?

If you read the documentation it will answer 99% of your questions: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/

Also if you want a solution to your problems read this first: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first
