I'm looking for a game like Gauntlet that I can play with my wife. We just finished Gauntlet IV on Genesis, and something similar but not exactly the same would be great, especially if there's something that incorporates more strategy or puzzle solving. Any system is good. Any ideas?

One of the greatest games ever made was a little top down RPG called Diablo. It had fully voice acted NPCs. It had amazing lore and it would be like Gauntlet mixed with skyrim.

It's only downside was you needed to have two computers to play but luckily, they created a Playstation 1 version of the game that was two player. My brother and I put 50+ hours into that game together going into dungeons and fighting our way through the denizens of hell. It was a hard game but dying wasn't the end of the world.

That would be my strongest recommendation for you both!

Also, it works on my retropie on pi3 so my brother and I have put some additional time in.

It immediatelly reminded me Goofy Troop (SNES). Hope you enjoy. :)

Rambo: First Blood part II is a great classic top view CO-OP game for the Sega Master System. Also, shock troopers for the Neo Geo is loads of fun.

Hey guys! I'm talking about a nice discovery I've made today in this topic: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/9442/a-site-specialized-in-cataloging-co-op-games

It's related to what we are talking in this topic here.

I remember Ikari Warriors as well, but unsure if you'd be a fan of the military shooter setting? Heavy Barrel might be another - I think it's 2 players, and you can get it on the NES and Arcade.

I don't recall if Chaos Engine (Genesis) would also be 2 player.

Once again, all shooters, unsure if there's a lot of puzzles.

The Lost Vikings would also be a nice one, but it isn't top down. It is more puzzle-focused, though.

@thedeathstar if you like arcade, Smash TV is fun to beat. Vindicators is another top-down coop (tanks). RipOff is fun and fast, not really a campaign. Then there are shooters like 194x, DoDonPachi, TwoTigers etc.

There's also a stellar hack available entitled, 'Oh No! More Zombies Ate My Neighbors!' that features:

                                • 55 new levels, including 8 Bonus levels, a new Credit Level, and a secret Mystery level
                                • Reverse Inventory Cycling - Nothing I hated worse in the original game than
being chased by a werewolf, franticly hitting the B button looking for the
silverware, accidently passing it, and having to search through the entire
weapons stock again. Now if you hold down the "L" button, you can search
backwards through your weapons and items inventories. The formerly unused "Select"
button not brings up the victim radar.
                                • Random Starting Items and Weapons - When you start a new game or put in a password,
you will start with any weapon or item in the game (chosen at random) instead of
always getting the squirtgun and healthkit. All the ammo amounts have been
pre-selected for each weapon and item, so you won't start with 10 tomatos or 255
                                  healthkits.
                                • New Weapon: Banana - The banana weapon, which was replaced with the popsicle and
dummied out of the final release has been added to the game.
                                • New Enemy: Soda Machines - These possessed vending machines hurl a never-ending
supply of soda skyward. When they land, the explosion hurts any player in the blast
radius. You can run inbetween explosions if you time it right, or blow the machine
up with a bazooka and be rewarded with a 6-pack. Monster punches will also kill
the machine, but also destroys the 6-pack.
                                • New End of Level Bonus: Frankenstein Destroy Bonus (2000 points)
                                • New End of Level Bonus: Monster Frozen Bonus (2000 points)
                                • New Victim: Blue Cheerleader - She's alot like the old cheerleader, but she has
                                  a BLUE DRESS!!!!

I remember playing a lot of Bomberman '94 on the PC Engine/TG16 with my girl friend back in the day! This version supported up to 5 players at once! I think there's been a Bomberman/Dyna Blaster game ported to just about every retro console, handheld and the arcade.
