I would like to achieve something like the RPi version which start on console and goes straight to Emulationstation as I just use this laptop for Retropie, I don't need the hassle of having a UI in the background.

@BuZz Do I just need to uninstall the xubuntu-desktop package and run emulationstation? I'm not sure if the X server needs to be running in order to emulationstation and the emulators to work. How did you achieve this on the RPi?

Hope you can help. Thank you!

@netux Do not tag me directly when asking for help - we have >8000 users here. Imagine if everyone did that. I do not exist just to sit here answering questions (although it feels like it sometimes).

Ok, I apologize for tagging you directly.

I already checked the forum rules and read the documentation and there is no real answer for my question. For this reason I created this post.

Retropie already starts automatically for me when booting the laptop, however I don't really need the Xubuntu UI and I'm looking for a way to get rid of it and use the console instead just like it does in the RPi.

I just need to know if having a X server is required or not for emulationstation and the emulators.

          Thank you

Yes, X server is required to run emulationstation and the emulators in the x86 flavor of RetroPie.

Ok, thanks. So how is it possible to run it on the RPi without the X server running? Is this because of the difference on the architecture?

@netux Because RPI can do GLES directly on the framebuffer, and SDL1/SDL2 apps can support this (or RPI native apps using the RPI DISPMANX api).
