      Hi guys,

I have a problem whereby I cannot play any N64 games using Retropie / emulationstation.

I load the game and I can hear the sound (which sounds kinda buggy) but just get a black screen. I'm primarily trying to get Super Mario to work at this stage.

I have tried manually installing Mupen.
      https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Nintendo-64

I've also noticed strange black screen issues elsewhere such as on Aladdin for Sega I got the black screen at the end of the first level and had to quit so the progress was lost :(

Please provide exact instructions/commands if explaining a fix and assume I'm a total noob, because I am ;)

The ultimate reply would be a set of instructions of things to run/install so that I will be able to run any rom for any console without issue.

      Thanks,

      Pi Model: 3
RetroPie Version Used: Newest as of 10/4/16
      Controller used: PS3, wireless
      Error messages received: None

          Definite progress. Thank you.

I've got past to the title screen by changing the default emulator but things don't seem to be working correctly just yet as some games are crashing, laggy or locking up.

I've got 4 options in the default emulator menu:

          lr-mupen64plus
          mupen64plus-gles2n64
          mupen64plus-gles2rice
          mupen64plus-GLideN64
          *
I think I need to install the regular
          * 'Mupen64plus'** emulator from:
          https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Nintendo-64
...But I'm not quite sure how?

I also noticed there is a mention about screen res:
"Low screen resolution are recommended to get best performance. Performance suffers if HD resolutions are used."

What res should I choose and how do I set it?

          Thanks again

You already have it installed by default. Mupen64plus is all three of the video plugins, gles2n64, gles2rice, and GLideN64.

@Piface choose the lowest resolution (which is in the same menu where you switch the default emulator. See link above). But you really shouldn't expect any decent results out of n64 emulation on the pi. It's known to be buggy and incomplete. You can mess with default emulator, lower resolutions, and overclocking to get some to be playable but that's about it.

You may need to update it, (I can't remember the command of the top of my head)

                RPi B & RPi 3B OC (Now Raspberry pi 4b 8gb)
                Retropie (Latest Stable)
PiBox with Wind Tunnel Cooling System
