Hi I have a 2TB hard drive ext4 formatted is it possible for retropie on my Pi3 to mount this for ROMs and for kodi for my video as it is not being detected when I plug it in?

Does this 2TB external hard drive have a separate power adapter or does it draw power from the USB 3.0?

The power coming through the USBs on the Raspberry Pi won't be enough to power an external hard drive so you'll either need a separate power adapter or maybe a powered USB hub (that has it's own separate power adapter).

Here's some other information on this subject:

@backstander it has its own power supply, was detected as NTFS but not as ext4

I use a Seagate 1TB backup drive (was available in Argos for a steal of £50), run through the on-board USB ports and it works perfectly. The 2TB drives are exactly the same just 2TB instead of 1TB

It is a 2 1/2" drive though and is designed to be USB powered, an external 3 1/2" drive will definatly need an external power supply but most decent 2 1/2" USB powered drives should be fine

If I recall how I did it, install RetroPie as normal on the SDCard, once its up and running, plug in your USB drive and RetroPie should auto-detect it and create and copy the files onto the USB drive ready for RetroPie to use and run from the USB instead of the intenal SDCard

I'm now using HyperPie, which does the same once you plug in a USB drive and sets it up automatically but is designed to boot straight into the HyperPie. Also I don't think it comes with any desktop as its designed to be only for emulation

Thanks, I forgot to preface that external hard drives with Laptop sized 2.5" hard drives in them will probably work with the RPi USB ports but Desktop sized 3.5" hard drives will typically not work.
