      Hi, I'm in the process of sticking my Pi3 into a disused Icade cabinet and given my favourite arcade games are shmups am going to have my monitor (ipad screen) positioned vertically. Someone has just told me Retropie cannot be displayed vertically. I've gone through lots of options and cannot get the screen to rotate at all. Appreciate any help please or indeed be advised if this isn't possible. Many thanks in advance.

          In your Boot config.txt put this line at the top to rotate 90 deg
          display_rotate=1

            Hi @Mamemeister - That was me BTW :-) I wasn't saying it couldn't but was pointing out some possible issues.

            The problem with rotating via the RPI firmware is that there is a performance hit, and some games may not run as fast as they would without the option. It's more efficient to rotate via the emulators themselves (eg via retroarch configuration), however, then the Emulation Station launcher won't be rotated.

            I would definitely test it first though as it may be ok for what you want to use it for (the performance may also depend on the video output resolution). I haven't tried it on a RPI3. If you google "raspberry pi rotate performance" you will find some other references to this.

                  Cheers guys, just added the rotate line and it's displaying nicely. I tried Dodonpachi and it seemed to hold up pretty well with just a little slow down with big explosions which is expected. I notice it doesn't fill the top and bottom of the screen. Do I need to set the resolution?

                    @Mamemeister All good thanks! Nice to see you here :-)

                    It might be possible to sort that by adjusting the aspect ratio for RetroArch for that emulator - but I'm not 100% sure this will sort it as I've done little experimentation with the screen rotated.

                    You can try adjusting aspect ratio for the system you are using - https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Configuration-Editor - it is possible to specify a custom ratio also - you could experiment also in the RetroArch GUI - (Select+X) (it wont save the settings by default, but you will be able to see what settings you can change and see if changing aspect ratio helps etc)

                    You should also confirm that the screen is completely filled when running Emulation Station etc - if not, it might be an incorrect video mode or you may need to play with overscan.

                        Thanks for all the help gents but I'm struggling a little here. What's the easiest way to access these config files, am I right in thinking you can do so remotely through your pc ?

                            To access the system remotely you can use ssh https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/SSH

                            You may want to do some reading up on using the linux console if unfamiliar.

                            The configuration editor about can be access from the retropie menu of emulationstation as can the retropie-setup script.

                            To experiment with retroarch options - press SELECT+X during a game (if using a libretro based emulator - they start with lr-)

                              Thanks for all the help guys, decided after experimenting to just stick with horizontal as it displays both pretty well. Here's a wee video of it in action, hope it's ok to share here.
