Just updated my pie to 4.2 from 4.x.
After updating i get the following...

      lvl0: es_systems.cfg is missing the <systemList tag!
lvl0: Error while parsing systems configuration file!

Steps I have done to troubleshoot.

      1. I deleted the file altogether and let the system rerun the install.
This created the file dynamically with all tags including <systemList></systemList>.
Everthing appears to be correct yet i get the above error message no matter what.

The permissions ar read for everyone and rw for the owner root, so the user pi running emulationstation should have the ability to "parse" the file.

      Please help!

        NM!
I fixed it on my own. This issue was the file was blank in /home/pi/.emulationstation/.
I copied the file from /etc/emulationstation and run emulationstation as pi.

        All is well!

@Mahlon If you are happy to just use the default es_systems.cfg file, ie alphabetical order and default names etc you should actually delete the version in /home/pi/.emulationstation. The system will treat this as a custom config file. If you add extra systems to the Pi not already in this config file they won't appear unless you add them manually as it looks here first for the systems to display. If this doesn't exist it defaults to the /etc/emulationstationversion.
