SD Memory Issue

I get the feeling this issue has been had many times, but nevertheless I cannot find an answer. I'm using a 32gb micro sd, but it's telling me there's not enough space in the retropie rom folder to add a psx game. When I popped the card into my laptop, it's telling me I have 1.74gb of free space out of 3.72gb. This can't be possible with a 32 gig card. When I did the usual googling, I'm getting answers involving expanding the file system, but I'm using the current retropie version and that's no longer necessary. Still, I'm showing less space than is correct. Can anyone here be so kind as to enlighten me what the problem is and how I should go about correcting it? It would be hugely appreciated. Thanks so much for the help!

Correction, my laptop is showing my 32gb Sandisk Ultra Plus as having 36.4 mb free of 56.8 mb.

The 56Mb you are seeing is a fat formatted partition that contains some configuration and boot files for the Pi. You cannot see the Retropie folders by putting the SD in a Windows PC.
If you want to know how much space is remaining, open file manager from the Retropie menu and it is displayed at the bottom of the screen, e.g. 4945M/31986M on my Pi means I have around 4.9GB free on my 32GB SD card.

@simonster Thank You for taking the time to help. File manager shows 1080M/7409M (14%). I'm pretty new to this, but why would the partition be so small?And how would I go about increasing the available space? Isn't v4.2 supposed to automatically expand the file system? I was attempting to put Tetris into psx and it says "there is not enough space on roms. You need an additional 357mb to copy these files."

You can rerun the expand filesystem option from raspi-config under advanced options. But it seems odd that it would use 32gb if available. It could be a fake card and actually is only 8GB, did you buy it from a reputable store?
Easy way to check if you have a Windows PC is to put the card in and run diskmgmt.msc . On the left will be all the physical disks present in the machine along with their drive layout on the right. You will see the physical disk size as reported to windows. The Retropie card will have a 56Mb partition and then the other should fill the disk. If it does and the size is reported as 8GB on the left, chances are the card is only 8GB.

@simonster I purchased from walmart, shouldn't be an issue. I was considering just running diskpart to remove the partition and reformat, then loading the backup image I made. Would that just bring me right back to square one, though, if I made the image whilst this problem existed?

@the86thcreator quick though, as you didn't mention. Did you start with Retropie image from the download link on the website or are you using a 3rd party one?

@simonster I started out with the Retropie image from the download link. Update, I just used the expand filesystem option and problem solved. It's showing 23G/29G (78%). With the new version auto-expanding, I hadn't been aware that you could still run the expand filesystem option. Thanks so much for your help!

So I am having this same issue, trying to move ROMS from my computer to the ROM folder in Raspberry Pi.
I followed the instructions above to expand the file system within raspi-config, rebooted a few times, but it still says I do not have enough room, despite having about 10GB of free space on the card. Any suggestions? Please be explicit as my knowledge of the Pi system is not too great.
